Automechanic training trial period. Final report.

Trail Period providing for Auto Mechanic Place: Maitidevi, Kathmadu Workshop: Rudramati Auto Workshop Time: 5-6:30 PM Auto Workshop Training Duration 2 weeks No of children 5 ( 7 the first day) Starting Date 5th August 2005 Ending Date 17th August 2005 Remarks Free Main Content: First step was frequent counseling with the children and taking them to visit three different workshops. We have two options. One is Photographer and another is Auto mechanic. Before sending them, their desires as well as their knowledge were checked. Please check our options list. We divide them into two groups according to their interest. - Photographer training - Auto mechanic We requested 3 workshop's owners to provide at least one week trial period but two of them denied providing for free. We went to Photographer training center and requested for trial periods. They provide only 2 days because it is too expensive for them to provide free trial period. At last we send our children regularly to Auto Workshop from 5-17 August,2005 Raju and Cedric were there to manage study material, transportation and monitoring of the children. Objectives of trial period: To encourage our children for training. To evaluate their capacity in following regular training and performing in practical situtations. To know their interest activities and sectors. To evaluate their practical knowledge. To let them discover a job and overall professional world. Problems: Some children were not regular. Two kids, who do not go to school, left after the first day. Mainly because they are not used to attend lessons. Some cannot read and write well (not enough education). Some kids, who do not go to school, asked for tippin. We only provided them tea after training. Achievements The 5 children who went there regularly found it really positive. They can decide what they want to do in real pratical life. They want to continue with this training. The children acquired self-confidence and realized they are able to achieve some things. Final report: When this trial period finished, we met with the children to make them talk about it, and to get their feelings about it. We asked five main questions for all (Shiva, Dinesh, Ishor, Mahesh, Basanta) our participating children. They respond all questions and anwered as below. Q. 1. How was your trial period workshop?· Excellent · Not hard · Little bit hard · Enjoyed it, had pleasure going there. · Meaningful and significant for their choice of life. The kids really enjoyed these two weeks in workshop. They particularly liked practicising on motorbikes. Q. 2. Do you want to continue with this training, or do you want to discover another job?· No we don’t have any other choice. · We want to continue with this training as soon as possible. All of the children are ready to go further with this job. No one asked for other trial periods in other jobs. Q.3. Did you face any problem during this period? · Yes, to read and write what teacher writes on the blackboard. · Book looks very simple but still we can't follow that (lack of education, not used to reading books) · Some names of parts and tools cannot be remembered very easily, because they are English names. Some have problems with writing and reading during classroom sessions (theoretical part of trial period). Q.4. Can you imagine doing this job in your future life? Are you going to countinue? · Yes, we can. · After finishing our training we can work in a workshop For them, it is ok, they really liked it. Q.5. Do you agree to be honest, disciplined, to make good future carrier?· Yes we are very much intested and we can do · It's hard but we can try our best · We can make our carrier with this training They promised they will follow good behavior. CONCLUSION:· Since it has been really positive experience for the kids, it would be good to find other trial periods for other jobs. · It would be good to find workshops for apprenticeship with these kids. · But in Nepal it seems no possible to find our apprenticeship and any job placement free of cost. We tried to find some place but they did not agree with our concept, and always ask for money · If kids are to go further with training, 3 months will not be enough. After 3 months they can only ask for a position of helper in a workshop. · We have to send them to continue with the Autoworkshop training because they hope we can change their life. They are waiting for good opportunity · The Photograher training was not continued because they did not provide one week. We have to search new options to them very soon. · Their main difficulty originates from their lack of education, which can make apprenticeship or training kind of painful. For some children, it may be better to wait that they acquire higher reading / writing / English levels.
